"We showed real spirit”
It was a game of two halves for HSV in the 110th Hamburg derby at the Millerntor, as they came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. Here is the match reaction.
Robert Glatzel: We knew it wasn’t going to be easy to get the win here. And we know how hard it is to get back into a game here once behind. At half time, we said that nothing’s over yet and we just need a goal to get back into things. That’s exactly what we did. To draw level against a top side after a poor first half shows real spirit.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: We cannot be happy with our first-half performance and spirit. We had the unluckiest start imaginable to the game. At the break, we swore we would show another side to us in the second half, one which we know we’re capable of showing and that we want to see. We were in better spirits, scored our goals at a good time and were able to salvage a point. Of course, we’d like to have won, but when you look at the 90 minutes as a whole, you see how difficult it was to even draw level and we worked hard to achieve that.
"It’s an OK result given the way the game played out" Jonas Meffert
Jonas Meffert: We changed tactics a bit at half time, left it all on the pitch for our fans and deservedly drew level. I personally believe their first goal shouldn’t have counted. It’s an OK result given the way the game played out and that we were away from home. Of course, we wanted more in the form of a win, but we made too many mistakes in the first half.
Immanuel Pherai: We are glad to have come away with a point. We didn’t defend well for their first goal, and the second was an unfortunate stroke of luck. Despite that, we remembered that a game lasts 90 minutes, and we really lifted ourselves as a team at the break. Bobby, Bascho and Ferro in particular had some strong words. We can be happy that we got back into the game and that we showed heart.
Jonas Boldt: At the end of the day, the first half belonged to St. Pauli and the second to us. At the start of the game, you could see that both teams respected each other and made a tentative start to the game. Then we let them into it a bit, conceded twice and then didn’t do much at the other end. Hats off to us for our comeback in the second half. We were facing the side at the top of the league, after all, and one who lost the last time we played each other at the Volksparkstadion.
"We tried to find solutions at half time" Tim Walter
Tim Walter: It was a spiky game, one which we were in control of until they scored. Regardless of whether it was clear contact, we weren’t set up properly at the corner. We were a bit peeved after that and then went on to concede a slapstick second. We tried to find solutions at half time. We made some tactical tweaks and worked two very nice goals. It then turned into a war of attrition on a difficult playing surface. We’re pleased to come away with a point.
Fabian Hürzeler: It’s a rubbish feeling. We were the better team over 90 minutes, and played an active role in the game, especially in the first half. We deserved a two-goal lead and then had several chances to score a third. If we had, the game would have gone differently. We also made a good start to the second half. HSV scored two goals through individual pieces of quality, but from our perspective we made things a little easy for them. It’s disappointing to only come away with a point after dominating for 90 minutes. We wanted to win, but we’ll keep working and try to learn from our mistakes.
