Bochum hand Hamburg first league defeat of the season
Zulj, Blum and Chibsah got their names on the scoresheet to help power VfL past HSV on Sunday.
Hamburger SV's unbeaten start to the league season came to an end at the Volksparkstadion on Sunday (22nd November), as VfL Bochum deservedly took all three points back to the Ruhrstadion. The hosts found themselves behind after the first half, Robert Zulj's 35th-minute penalty giving the visitors the lead. Simon Terodde's ninth goal of the season gifted the Rothosen momentary hope, only to be dashed twice in quick succession in the closing stages as Bochum romped home to victory.
Zulj sends Bochum into half-time lead
Daniel Thioune made three changes from the team who had conceded a last-minute equaliser in Kiel two weeks ago; Hunt, Wintzheimer and Jatta coming back into the side in the place of Narey, Kittel and Ambrosius, with HSV showing their tactical flexibility again, returning to a back three. The visitors displayed a lack of match sharpness in the opening quarter of an hour, finding a HSV player with their passes too often for manager Thomas Reis' liking, yet the hosts were also unable to make the most of the opportunities, choosing the wrong option so that the chances fizzled out. As the visitors found their footing, an end-to-end game developed, Zulj heading over when well-placed eight yards out and a Dudziak goal correctly ruled out for offside after an excellent counter-attacking move from the hosts.
With the HSV effort ruled out, it was the visitors who took the lead ten minutes before the interval. Robert Zulj's quick thinking from a free-kick caught the Hamburg backline off-guard, Robert Tesche left through on goal and only able to be stopped by a foul from Sven Ulreich. The impressive Zulj stepped up himself to plant the ball down the middle and give VfL the opening goal of the game. The half-time Bochum lead was more than deserved, chances drying up for the hosts in the final third of the half, sloppiness in possession being the main contributing factor.
Blum wondergoal puts VfL on their way
The opening quarter of an hour of the second half saw periods of pressure for both sides, chances occuring more through mistakes in possession than attractive combination play. In trying to play out from the back, the Rothosen invited their guests onto them, in the 56th minute lucky to escape without conceding another goal as Danny Blum won the ball on the edge of the Hamburg area, but Bochum were unable to muster a serious attempt on Ulreich's goal. Despite the chances coming for the guests, it was HSV who got back into the game in the 65th minute, Aaron Hunt clipped in the area by Maxim Leitsch and Simon Terodde continuing his goalscoring exploits with the resulting penalty.
It would prove to be a false dawn, Bochum unfazed by conceding the goal and hitting back with a one-two punch in the 78th and 82nd minute. A VfL counter saw Danny Blum played through into what looked like a promising but not immediately dangerous position, yet the 29-year-old spotted Sven Ulreich off his line and sumptuously chipped the 'keeper from the right-hand edge of the area to put his side back into the lead. The third followed soon after, Zulj making his way to the byeline and the Hamburg defence disorganised in the middle, leaving space for Ganvoula to lay into the path of fellow substitute Chibsah, who put the icing on the cake for the visitors. There was little to be seen of a late comeback this time around from the Rothosen, who will be looking for a more disciplined and energetic performance next Sunday away to FC Heidenheim (kick-off 1:30pm).
