Ruthless Hamburg end year on a high at the Volksparkstadion
Simon Terodde's sixth brace in twelve games put Hamburg on their way to victory in the last game of the calendar year at home.
Hamburger SV swept SV Sandhausen aside at the Volksparkstadion on Tuesday night (15th December), recording their second win in as many games. The hosts found themselves in front at the break despite Sandhausen enjoying the better of the chances, Simon Terodde continuing his scoring run with his twelfth of the season. The guests were unable to profit from their period of domination early in the second half as well, and were punished by a highly efficient attacking unit with three goals in the closing half an hour.
Terodde twelth leaves hosts in front
The HSV coaching staff made a single change from the tight win in Darmstadt on Saturday, Aaron Hunt replacing Khaled Narey and the Rothosen returning to a 3-5-2 formation. The guests were much more active and awake from the first whistle, former Nuremberg man Alexander Esswein enjoying two good sights of Sven Ulreich's goal in the opening seven minutes, yet in the best of the two chances was denied by a great block from the returning Hunt. The home side grew into the game and had their two best chances of the half just before the half-hour mark. A surging run from Jeremy Dudziak opened up space for Aaron Hunt on the edge of the Sandhausen area, but curled the ball just over the bar in the 28th minute.
Two minutes later the Rothosen took the lead in curious circumstances. It was Dudziak at the heart of the move again, receiving the ball on the left-hand side and driving to the edge of the area before playing across the six-yard box with the outside of his foot. Sandhausen defender Ivan Paurevic was in a perfect position to clear but inexplicably let the ball roll through to Simon Terodde behind him at the back post, who had the simple task of passing in from four yards out for his twelth goal of the season. The guests looked most threatening from set-piece situations and Paurevic himself had the final chance of the half, yet couldn't control his header from an Esswein corner and the ball sailed harmlessly over Sven Ulreich's crossbar.
Efficient Hamburg pull away in second half
It was the guests who started the half strongly again, pressing their hosts back into their own final third and not relenting until the hour mark. The Hamburg box was peppered with corners and crosses, all hands on deck to head and slide the ball away, protecting Sven Ulreich from any efforts at goal, who was only called into action from Nikolas Nartey's shot from all of 25 yards. Sandhausen coach Michael Schiele will have been tearing his hair out as his charges were unable to make the most of their domination and conceded a second in the 67th minute with the Rothosen's first foray into the SVS half since the restart. Tim Leibold's deep cross could only be headed by Contento under pressure from Josha Vagnoman straight back to Simon Terodde on the penalty spot, who took one touch to settle himself and the second to hammer past Rick Wulle for his sixth (!) brace in twelve games.
The match continued to be very even, but the Rothosen were incredibly efficient in their attacking play, whilst Sandhausen were unable to make the most of their chances. The game was all but over in the 78th minute, David Kinsombi playing through to fellow substitute Amadou Onana, who used his pace to race through the middle of the Baden-Württemberger's defence and chip over the advancing Wulle, using the second HSV opportunity of the half for a second goal. The third goal demoralised the guests, who had been unable to get their just rewards for an energetic and courageous display, and were ultimately beaten by a highly efficient HSV team. Josha Vagnoman added insult to injury in stoppage time, heading in Bobby Wood's excellent chipped cross for his first goal of the season with the last touch of the game. Daniel Thioune's charges will hope to replicate the performance in the final game of the calendar year in Karlsruhe on Monday night (kick-off 8:30pm CET).
