Narey strike powers HSV to third consecutive win
HSV continued their encouraging start to the season on Saturday, Khaled Narey scoring the only goal of the game in Fürth.
Khaled Narey's first goal of the season against his old employees Greuther Fürth secured the win for HSV at the Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer on Saturday (17th October), as the Rothosen continued their excellent start to the season. The win was in the main thanks to a gutsy performance in defence in a game of few chances for either side, the guests having to play the last 37 minutes with ten men thanks to Toni Leistner's red card just after half time. Narey's deft finish in the second minute of first-half injury time ended up separating the two teams, as Hamburg equalled their best start to the season since 1974/75.
Narey uses best chance to put Rothosen ahead
Daniel Thioune had to deal with a number of injuries before the game, something that was reflected in the starting eleven, as Toni Leistner and Gideon Jung came in as centre-backs and Moritz Heyer shifted over to left-back, whilst Sven Ulreich made his competitive bow in goal. Both teams were keen to make an impression after the international break, starting energetically, as the Rothosen threatened from two corners and Fürth midfielder Paul Seguin hammered a shot from all of 25 yards against the bar inside the opening five minutes. The first quarter of an hour came to an end with the closest the Rothosen would come until first-half injury time, as first Khaled Narey sweetly caught a volley to test Fürth 'keeper Sascha Burchert for the first time in the game, followed 30 seconds after by an Aaron Hunt half-volley that whistled past the right-hand upright.
That would remain the best chance for a long period, as the hosts were constantly snapping at the heels of the Rothosen, Jeremy Dudziak having to be replaced after landing awkwardly on his arm and three Fürth players in total seeing yellow cards from referee Martin Petersen for over-zealous challenges. Lots of niggly fouls disrupted the flow of the game, neither side able to get into their passing rhythm, something which suited the Franconians much more than their guests. Just as it looked like the teams would go into the break with nothing to separate them, one moment of quality put Hamburg into the lead a minute before the half-time whistle. Simon Terodde had been largely anonymous for the first half, but picked the ball up on the left-hand side, drove infield and guided a perfect slide-rule pass into the path of Khaled Narey, who chipped over the advancing Burchert with his right-foot to put his ex-employers behind at the break.
HSV hang on despite half an hour with 10 men
The guests' task became that much more difficult only eight minutes into the second half as a Fürth counter from a HSV corner saw Nielsen played through on goal and Toni Leistner was caught the wrong side of the Swede. The Fürth striker fell under the challenge of the HSV captain, who as last man was given his marching orders by referee Petersen. The following minute saw Sven Ulreich display why HSV had made such an effort to sign him, as he pulled off two excellent stops from the free-kick and resulting corner after the red card. Despite having the man advantage Stefan Leitl's team found it difficult to genuinely threaten the Hamburg backline, often playing the ball in between the lines but lacking the cross or final ball to bring Ulreich into action.
Whilst playing large swathes of the game without the ball and deep in their own half, the Rothosen weren't completely ineffective as an attacking force, Sonny Kittel only able to play the ball into Burchert's arms from 10 yards out with his left after bullying build-up play from Terodde. Fürth had the ball in the net in the 73rd minute but referee Petersen correctly noticed a hand in the build-up as Leweling had fought his way through the massed ranks in the middle of the Hamburg box. The closing stages saw Fürth dominate possession but fail to create clear-cut chances, the closest they came to levelling things up was a header from 19-year-old Leweling in injury time which Ulreich watched sail over the bar. Thioune will be thrilled to have seen how his side saw the game out, especially given their troubles defensively late on last season, claiming the second away win in a row and third consecutive victory to start the season with a bang. The Rothosen will look to continue their good work at home to Erzgebirge Aue on Wednesday (kick-off 6:30pm), the first of three home fixtures.
