HSV underline comeback qualities with win in Braunschweig
A David Kinsombi brace bookended a four-goal HSV comeback as the Hinrunde drew to a close with a victory at the Eintracht-Stadion.
Hamburger SV came back from two goals down to beat an error-laden Braunschweig at the Eintracht-Stadion on Saturday (23rd January), finishing the first half of fixtures as league leaders. The hosts made the most of slack HSV defending to open up a surprise two-goal lead in the first period, David Kinsombi getting one back just before the break. The Rothosen kept the pressure high after the restart, forcing their hosts into three fatal mistakes to put the Rothosen out of sight by the 65th minute of the game.
Kinsombi reduces deficit after Eintracht double
Daniel Thioune opted for consistency in naming an unchanged starting line-up for the third league game in a row, with no new injury concerns and looking to continue the momentum of the unbeaten run. After the expected confident start from the visitors, it was the hosts who took a surprise lead in the ninth minute for their first goal in three league games. Nick Proschwitz's cross from the right-hand side of the box was headed back into the middle by Marcel Bär, Felix Kroos bundling in from close range for his first goal in yellow and blue since signing from Union Berlin in the summer. The early opener very much suited the hosts, the game struggling to develop any kind of rhythm thanks to niggly fouls and complacent passing on both sides.
The Rothosen were finding it difficult to break down a well-organised and compact Braunschweig defence, attacks usually breaking down well before the final third. BTSV doubled their lead in the 41st minute shortly after HSV's best chance of the half until that point, Bakery Jatta controlling Sonny Kittel's cross on his chest before smashing over on the volley from close range. The resulting goal-kick was flicked on twice by players in yellow and blue, Toni Leistner then trying to head back to Sven Ulreich, but the play was read by Eintracht winger Bär, squeezing in between and placing past the former Bayern 'keeper. The visitors would hit back just before half-time, Sonny Kittel skipping past his man into the box on the left-hand side, laying back to David Kinsombi on the penalty spot, who fired home to give the Rothosen hope heading into the second period.
HSV punish complacent Eintracht
Daniel Thioune wasted no time in changing a system that had failed to spark into life in the first half, bringing on Aaron Hunt and Amadou Onana to liven up the HSV midfield for the start of the second period. It paid dividends almost immediately, the Rothosen finding it easier to find space in between the Eintracht lines of defence and equalising six minutes after the restart. Jeremy Dudziak's intended through ball to Kinsombi was intercepted by Brian Behrendt, who could only clear as far as the waiting Simon Terodde, who placed into the open goal, Jasmin Fejzić having advanced out of his goal to cut off Kinsombi.
It would be two more individual errors by the hosts that would see HSV race into a two-goal lead by the 65th minute. Aaron Hunt, setting the tempo after coming off the pitch, crowned his performance with the go-ahead goal, letting fly from a tight angle, the ball squirming between the legs of the unfortunate Fejzić. Five minutes later the goalrush was complete, Moritz Heyer pressing Schlüter high up the pitch and blocking his attempted clearance. Heyer surged into the box from the right-hand side, finding Kinsombi who had the simplest of tasks from four yards out to double his tally for the day. The final half an hour of the game saw the visitors happy to sit behind the ball and let their hosts create chances, Eintracht looking most threatening at a plethora of set-pieces, yet unable to turn some goalmouth scrambles towards Sven Ulreich's goal. Braunschweig huffed and puffed but were unable to call Ulreich into action, the Rothosen seeing the game out comfortably for a second consecutive win. There's little time for the Rothosen to celebrate, the Rückrunde starting on Tuesday night (8:30pm CET) with a tricky trip to in-form Fortuna Düsseldorf.
