“Frustrating, but there are plenty of positives to take”
HSV put in a strong second-half performance away to SC Freiburg of the Bundesliga, but they ultimately suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat and exited from the DFB-Pokal. Here is the match reaction.
Sebastian Schonlau: We did really well in phases in the first half, played out from the back well, but were unable to truly capitalise from these spells of possession. We showed the necessary gall, desire and determination in the second half, which meant we managed to attack with courage against one of the Bundesliga’s best teams. It’s frustrating to have been knocked out, but there are plenty of positives to take from the game, particularly from the second half.
Jonas Meffert: We had the first real chance of the game from an early corner, a chance which we usually would take, and that maybe would have meant the game would have gone a lot differently. We had a lot of possession in the first half, but too far away from goal. We showed more of a desire to get forward in the second half, and we were better at getting it into the box, but we were unfortunately unable to make it count. However, I think we played well and that we worked together well as a team.
"It wasn’t enough against one of the best teams in the Bundesliga." Steffen Baumgart
Miro Muheim: We played out from the back really well in the first half but were lacking that real punch in attack. We then found this in the second half, implemented the coach’s plans well and got back into the game. It’s a shame that it wasn’t enough, and that we ended up losing and getting eliminated.
Matheo Raab: Today, we showed we’ll never go hiding, no matter who we’re playing. We wanted to test ourselves against one of the Bundesliga’s best teams and give it our all. We were considerably braver in the second half and proved that when we’re on it, we can compete with anyone. It’s a shame that didn’t do anything to change the result.
Steffen Baumgart: I saw us play a good game, in which we had the first good goalscoring opportunity, and I’m unsure as to how the keeper managed to save that one. Then, we failed to defend a corner, as Freiburg blocked our players very cleverly. They then got a penalty shortly before the break, and it was definitely a disputable decision. You’ve already got one foot out of the cup when you’re 2-0 down to Freiburg at half time, but we put in a great performance in the second half and were a lot braver, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough against one of the best teams in the Bundesliga.
