3-3 draw marks goalfest in Hanover
Despite taking a 3-0 lead thanks to a hattrick from Aaron Hunt, Hamburger SV had to settle for a draw against Hannover 96.
HSV picked up a point away at northern rivals Hannover 96. Aaron Hunt put the visitors 3-0 up at the HDI Arena (14’, 34’, 50’), but then had to watch as Hannover fought back in the second half, netting the equaliser in the final minutes.
Hunt in fantastic form…
HSV head coach Daniel Thioune made zero changes from the team which won 2-0 against Heidenheim ahead of the international break. Thioune’s decision looked to have paid off, as the team started strong in today’s Nordderby.
The Rothosen were solid at the back, dominant in midfield and clinical in attack - all of which helped them go into the break with a 2-0 lead. Wintzheimer and Hunt combined to score both goals in similar fashion. After a smart pass from Wintzheimer, Hunt was able to place the ball in the back of the net (14’, 34’). Kittel came close to also getting on the scoresheet after a pass from Hunt, while Hannover thought they’d been denied a penalty down the other end.
...but just one point in the end
After the break, it was Hannover who came out with a different tactical setup and a more attacking mindset. Despite this, it was HSV who would add to their score as Wintzheimer and Hunt combined yet again to put the visitors 3-0 up (50’). It was Hunt’s first hat-trick for Hamburger SV, as the team looked firmly in control.
However, Hannover refused to be discouraged by this latest setback and continued to press. They were rewarded for their efforts, as Haraguchi (56’) and Ducksch (68’) cut the deficit to within one. The closing minutes were tense. Simon Terodde scored 90 seconds after being subbed on, but it was then disallowed due to the striker being narrowly offside. Hannover were then able to score the equaliser in the final minutes to complete their comeback and take valuable points off HSV.
