HSV win 3-1 in thriller against Magdeburg
Hamburger SV beat 1. FC Magdeburg 3-1 at home in a dramatic encounter. They survived more than 30 minutes with ten men to grind out a deserved victory.
On Sunday (20th October), HSV beat second-placed side 1. FC Magdeburg 3-1 at home. In front of 57,000 spectators at a sold-out Volksparkstadion, the Rothosen took an early lead through Königsdörffer (5’), before Katterbach (42’) and Selke (45’) added a second and a third before the break as HSV got their reward for a superb first-half performance. The game changed after half time however when Schonlau was sent off (57’) and Magdeburg got one back from the penalty spot (63’). HSV defended with their lives, and with the crowd behind them managed to hold on their third home win of the season. The Rothosen leapfrogged their opponents into third place in the table.
A first-half goalfest …
Head coach Baumgart picked the returning Heuer Fernandes in goal for the match against Magdeburg, who had won all four of their previous away games. Königsdörffer started up front in place of the injured Glatzel, and the 23-year-old justified his inclusion in the fifth minute, when he headed Muheim’s cross into the corner to give HSV the lead. It was a real striker’s goal.
The atmosphere was rocking from the get-go at a sold-out Volkspark. Königsdörffer’s strike partner Selke had another headed opportunity in the eleventh minute. HSV started with intent, but the visitors were also looking to make things happen. The Rothosen remained the more dangerous team however, and came very close to a second goal on 20 minutes. Muheim and Königsdörffer attacked incisively down the left, but this time the ball went just wide of goal. In the 32nd minute, Richter volleyed a Königsdörffer cross towards goal, but luck was not on his side as clattered off the bar. HSV still had a narrow lead, but it could easily have been more even at that point in the game. FCM however continued to pose a danger, like when former Rothosen man Amaechi curled just wide of goal just before half time. But HSV were unplayable in the first half and added the second with a truly sensational goal. In the 42nd minute, Katterbach dribbled past the whole Magdeburg defence before clinically slotting home to put his side 2-0 up. This wonderful goal seemed to spur HSV on even more. Selke added another in first-half injury time, when he arrived almost unchallenged in the six-yard box following a rehearsed corner-kick routine and made it 3-0 before the break. What a first half!
… and a dramatic second period
The second half began much as the first had ended. HSV were powering forward, and had another big chance through Selke just seconds after the restart, but this time the 1.95-metre-tall striker fired wide by a whisker. Things can change quickly in football though, and in the space of five minutes, it went from almost 4-0 to suddenly 3-1.
In the 57th minute, captain Schonlau made a huge error, and in trying to atone for it fouled FCM forward Kaars. He was the last man, and Schonlau was sent off. Five minutes later, Muheim put in a late challenge on Burcu in the box, and Kaars converted the resulting penalty to make it 3-1. From the 63rd minute, it was almost a completely different match. Magdeburg piled on the pressure with an extra man and all the momentum. As was needed in this situation, the Rothosen defended as a team with determination, desire and passion. Every slide tackle, defensive header and clearance was celebrated like a goal. Buoyed by their supporters, both teams gave everything in what was a truly thrilling encounter. In the 83rd minute, HSV ‘keeper Heuer Fernandes prevented Hercher from cutting the deficit to 3-2 with an effort from close range. The Rothosen clung on to their two-goal advantage with ten men and 50,000 fans behind them through 90 minutes plus five of injury time. They stood strong at the back and repelled as a team everything that was thrown at them. After playing more than 30 minutes with ten men, they were able to celebrate another three points at home. This was richly deserved for the first-half goalfest and second-half determination.
