HSV suffer 4-2 defeat away at SV Elversberg
The Rothosen took an early lead through Davie Selkie, before four goals for the hosts coupled with a red card for Jonas Meffert saw HSV fall to their second defeat of the season.
Hamburger SV fell to a 4-2 defeat away at SV Elversberg on Saturday afternoon. The Rothosen started brightly in front of a sold-out crowd of 9,502 at the URSAPHARM-Arena, taking an early lead through Davie Selkie (6'). The hosts were then able to equalise shortly before the break through Fisnik Asllani (41'). After the break, it was Elversberg that assumed control over proceedings as they opened up a two-goal lead with Asllani (53') and Luca Schnellbacher (63') getting on the scoresheet. HSV were able to cut the deficit in the 83rd minute as Selkie scored his second of the match, but were then handed another setback in the form of a second yellow for Jonas Meffert (84'). Robin Fellhauer then netted a fourth for Elversberg (90'+6), as the Rothosen fell to their second defeat of the season.
A strong start...
Head coach Steffen Baumgart made one change to his starting line-up following last weekend's 3-1 home win against Magdeburg. Centre-back Lucas Perrin made his first start for HSV, replacing captain Sebastian Schonlau, who is serving a red-card suspension. The visitors needed just five minutes to open the scoring, as Jean-Luc Dompé drove down the left wing before sending a cross to the far post, where it was met by Selkie. Buoyed by the lead, HSV were able to assert their control over the game but it failed to result in any clear-cut chances on goal. Ransford Königsdörffer just missed getting on the end of a cross from Dompé (22').
SVE then found themselves with one of their first good chances on goal, as Lukas Petkov sent a volley towards goal from the edge of the penalty box that went just wide of the target (24'). HSV went down the other end immediately after, as Selkie directed a header on target following a cross from Dompé, but met his match in the form of SVE goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. The shot-stopper was able to get his fingertips to the ball, poking it over the bar (25'). The next good chance fell to Asllani, as he went on to power a long-range shot into the back of the net to bring his side level just before the break (41').
...and a hectic ending
Neither side made any chances at the start of the second half, as the hosts went on to carry the momentum from their earlier equaliser with them into the restart. Schnellbacher's shot was parried by Daniel Heuer-Fernandes, as the rebound fell favourably for Asllani. The striker only needed to tap it in past the HSV goalkeeper to score his second of the afternoon (53'). Elversberg were the better side at this point, carving out several chances for themselves in the minutes that followed. Baumgart elected to make a triple substitution at this point, bringing on Fabio Balde, Lukasz Poreba and Adam Karabec for Noah Katterbach, Marco Richter and Königsdörffer. But, before the trio could even really make an impact on the match, HSV found themselves trailing by two goals. Schnellbacher finished off a counter-attack to put Elversberg ahead, 3-1 (63').
With half an hour plus injury time left to play, HSV found themselves facing a tough task. Baumgart made two further changes, bringing Immanuel Pherai and Moritz Heyer for Dompé and Ludovic Reis. The Rothosen were able to get a goal back through Selkie in the 83rd minute, with the striker heading in a corner from Miro Muheim. A second yellow for Meffert then saw Baumgart's side reduced to just ten men, as they strove to get at least a goal back to rescue a point. The fourth official indicated that there would be a minimum of nine minutes of additional time, but it was the hosts that would go on to add to their tally late on. Fellhauer netted a well-taken strike in the sixth minute of injury time to seal a 4-2 win for his side, as HSV recorded their second defeat of the campaign.
