HSV say goodbye to trio including Ambrosius
The Hamburg native will leave the Rothosen at the end of the season, as will loanees Ignace Van der Brempt and Masaya Okugawa.
The HSV players met up for one final breakfast together on Monday (20th May) to wrap up the 2023/24 season. They also said farewell to three players in centre-back Stephan Ambrosius (25) as well as loanees Ignace Van der Brempt (22) and Masaya Okugawa (28). The trio’s contracts all expire on 30th June and will not be extended. The board including head of sport Jonas Boldt and director of professional football Claus Costa praised the departing player’s performances and commitment in front of the whole team, all of the coaches and staff, and presented them with leaving gifts.
12 years of ‘Stevo’ at HSV
It was a particularly emotional moment for HSV academy product Stephan Kofi Ambrosius. Raised in the Hamburg quarter of Wilhelmsburg, he has been at the club since the age of 13. Ambrosius spent time in the Rothosen’s academy between 2012 and 2017 before making the jump to the first team. The centre-back impressed with his uncompromising tackles and made his Bundesliga debut on 31st March 2018. With his unbreakable mentality and positive outlook, ‘Stevo’ went on to fight back from several bad knee injuries to become an often key player for the Rothosen in the 2. Bundesliga. He went on to play 49 competitive games and 3,824 minutes for the first team, though his time was affected by injuries. HSV would like to thank the Hamburg native, who is HSV through and through, for his exemplary efforts in Rothosen colours. Thank you, Stevo!
After much shorter but still eventful periods at the club, loanees Ignace Van der Brempt and Masaya Okugawa are also leaving the Rothosen. The Belgian right-back joined from then-Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg in summer 2023, and went on to make 24 appearances, recording four assists. Masaya Okugawa meanwhile came to the Rothosen from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in January. The Japanese midfielder featured eight times for HSV, and along with Van der Brempt is now returning to his parent club. Both are under contract at their respective sides until summer 2026. HSV would like to thank both for their efforts and wish them the best of luck for the future!
