HSV lose 1-0 in Paderborn
It was a disappointing Friday evening for Hamburger SV, with the Rothosen losing 1-0 away at SC Paderborn meaning it is now not mathematically possible to finish third and reach the relegation play-off.
Hamburger SV lost 1-0 in their away game on Friday evening (10th May) on matchday 33 against SC Paderborn. Steffen Baumgart’s men had to win the game in order to maintain any chance of reaching the relegation play-off, but didn’t find their way into the game and were behind from the seventh minute after a goal from Kostons. This remained the game's only goal, with HSV not doing enough in attack and ending the game without goals, points or the chance of reaching third place in the table.
Hamburg get off to a poor start…
HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart had to do without the suspended Meffert and injured Pherai in Paderborn. Van der Brempt returned at right-back, with Reis joining Suhonen in midfield as a pair of eights who would look to get forward at every opportunity. But there were not too many attacking opportunities from a Hamburg perspective in the early stages, with the hosts immediately seizing control of the game, playing the ball forward and having the first chance of the game through Bilbija. His fellow attacker Kostons then put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute, carrying the ball past Muheim on the right-hand side after a long ball, before smashing the ball into the roof of the net at the near post. Paderborn remained on top, with Kostons and Obermair missing further chances in the first fifteen minutes before HSV worked their way into the game and looked more comfortable against an opponent who let HSV come forward before looking to attack on the counter. The Rothosen managed to prevent most of these counters, but it took until the 36th minute before a first sight of goal against SCP’s compact 5-1-3-1 formation, with Dompe’s shot just wide of the right-hand post. This was followed by two more incursions into the penalty area, but both times crosses narrowly missed their targets in the middle. As a result, HSV went in at half time with plenty of room for improvement and a 1-0 deficit, despite vocal support from the travelling fans.
... and eventually succumb to defeat
Baumgart made three changes at half time and brought another man on in the 58th minute, changing to a back-three in order to be more effective in attack. It was Paderborn who had the first chance of the second half though, with Bilbija shooting from the left side of the box just before the hour mark. HSV stayed in the game thanks to help from the post. The Rothosen could have restored parity ten minutes later, with Okugawa laying the ball perfectly into the path of Königsdörffer, who charged towards SCP goalkeeper Boevink, but was prevented from firing home an equaliser at the last minute by Brackelmann, who scrambled back to make the tackle. This was the kind of chance that you need to take if you want to pick up points in a tough game, and hope was vanishing by the minute. But Hamburg never gave up and had further shots through Jatta and Heyer, but didn’t do enough in attack to put SC Paderborn’s lead in serious danger. Paderborn were increasingly restricted to defending their own goal and maintaining possession, with only brief flashes of attacking play. Hamburg themselves were restricted to just two late dangerous shots from Dompe and Benes, but both efforts narrowly missed the top left-hand corner. As a result, the Rothosen ended up losing the game 1-0, meaning that it is now mathematically impossible to reach the relegation play-off.
