HSV loan in Giorgi Chakvetadze
The 22-year-old Georgian comes to Hamburg from Belgian club KAA Gent on loan until the Summer.
HSV has strengthened its team with another young attacking player: Giorgi Chakvetadze has moved to Hamburg from Belgian first division club KAA Gent. The 22-year-old Georgian comes to Hamburg on loan and receives a contract until 30 June 2022. "Georgi is a flexible offensive player who is technically strong and capable of scoring goals. We have been watching his progress for some time. With him, we are expanding our options in the offensive area," says sports director Michael Mutzel about the creative midfielder.
Chakvetadze was born in the Georgian capital Tbilisi and also took his first steps in football there. He played for FC Norchi Dinamoeli Tbilisi in his youth before moving to their big city neighbours, 18-time Georgian champions FC Dinamo Tbilisi, where he progressed through the youth teams in the academy. In 2017, he made the leap to KAA Gent in Belgium just shortly after his 18th birthday. In the past few years, he played a total of 50 games in the Jupiler Pro League (5 goals, 8 assists) and ten international games in the Europa League and the UEFA Conference League. Chakvetadze has made 13 appearances for the Georgian national team. He scored five goals in the process. The midfielder, who is at home in both the creative centre and on the flanks, has also played for his country's U17s (18 games, 5 goals), U19s (14 games, 1 goal) and U21s (3 games).
Most recently, there were fewer minutes on the pitch at KAA Gent, which prompted the 1.83 metre tall right-footer to seek a new challenge in Hamburg. "I am happy that the transfer to HSV has worked out. The people in charge have given us a good feeling. Now I hope to settle in quickly and get to know my teammates so that I can help the club on the pitch," said Chakvetadze, who could already be on the pitch with his new teammates for the first time in tomorrow's friendly match against FC Midjylland (live on HSVtv and YouTube).
