HSV celebrate anniversary with 1-0 home win
Die Rothosen won their fourth home game of the season, defeating Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 thanks to a late Benes penalty. On their 136th anniversary, the win saw Hamburger SV overtake their guests from Düsseldorf in the table, who started the evening top of the league.
HSV secured a 1-0 home win over Fortuna Düsseldorf on matchday 8 of the 2023/24 season in front of 56,100 supporters at the Volksparkstadion on Friday night (29th September). On what was Hamburger SV’s 136th anniversary, die Rothosen put in a great performance against their opponents, who went into the game top of Bundesliga 2, and HSV got their reward at the end of a heated and emotional game when Lazlo Benes netted the winning goal. He first won the penalty and then coolly converted it in the 83rd minute to seal the win for the hosts – a perfect gift for the club’s anniversary.
A balanced start to the game...
HSV head coach Tim Walter made two changes to the side that began the match in Osnabrück last Friday, with both alterations coming on the left flank. Muheim came in for Heyer at the left of the back four, and Öztunali was given the nod on the left wing ahead of Dompe. It was Öztunali who set up the hosts’ first chance of the game as he perfectly placed a cross onto the head of Jatta, who could only pick out the side netting from close range.
A goal from that opportunity certainly would have lifted the lid on HSV’s anniversary party, during a game which, up until that point, had been an even contest: however, that chance appeared to mark the start of a dominant phase for die Rothosen, who went on to put their visitors under real pressure. The game began to be played exclusively in Düsseldorf’s half. Seriously feeling the pressure, the away side tried to look for a way out and get forward, but HSV’s pressing kept them penned in their own half. By the half-hour mark, HSV had seen 60% of the ball, and had taken six shots on goal compared to just one for Düsseldorf. Then suddenly, in the 36th minute, the visitors had a great chance to crash the party. A counterattack culminated in Klaus having a gilt-edged chance to put Fortuna in front, but Ramos got back to make a last-ditch tackle in the six-yard box to block the effort. Despite an exciting and eventful first half, the game remained goalless.
...and HSV claim victory late on
The intensity and speed of the game increased even more after the break, which meant that the game - on this stormy Friday evening in Hamburg – was constantly going from end to end. The wind never ceased to blow, the rain never ceased to fall, and this meant that Muheim’s 57th-minute free-kick had a bit of extra zip off the wet turf.
Fortuna keeper Kastenmeier was at full stretch to tip the resulting effort onto the post. It was HSV’s best chance to take the lead and treat themselves to an anniversary gift, along with Ramos and Glatzel’s successive opportunities shortly after, but Kastenmeier was equal to them all. Despite HSV’s dominance, it remained a tight and bitty affair – for example, Heuer Fernandes was called into action to keep out Johannesson’s effort. On the whole, the hosts remained on top, and were looking more and more likely to open the scoring – before receiving a golden opportunity to do so in the 81st minute. After referee Zwayer waved away the host’s claims for a penalty following Iyoha’s tackle on Benes, the video assistant referee decided to take a look, before asking Zwayer to refer to the screen and then award a spot kick. Benes calmly slotted home to make it 1-0 to HSV, a lead which the crowd helped to see home during the closing stages with unbelievable levels of noise at the Volksparkstadion. A red card for Zimmermann saw HSV with a numerical advantage in the final few minutes, and apart from a half chance for Ginczek, die Rothosen didn’t allow their guests much more than that as the game came to a close. A huge anniversary and home-win celebration would then follow, with the roughly 57,000 who were present at the Volksparkstadion cordially invited. The team and the fans rightly celebrated a fourth home win from four home games this season, as well as the 136th anniversary of the club.
