HSV beaten by Cardiff City in friendly at training camp
After beating FC Nantes 4-2 in their previous friendly, Hamburger SV fell to a 3-0 defeat to English Championship side Cardiff City in their second friendly of the weekend on Sunday.
HSV played the second friendly of their training camp in Austria on Sunday, 21st July. The Rothosen suffered a 3-0 defeat in Bramberg to Welsh side Cardiff City, who play in the second tier of English football. The day after their 4-2 win over FC Nantes, HSV head coach Steffen Baumgart decided to rest Meffert and Reis, while Glatzel, Selke and Suhonen were also unavailable, though they are all back in training. These five players instead trained individually on Sunday morning.
An impressive number of spectators from both Hamburg and Cardiff watched a first half where the two teams mostly cancelled each other out. It was a hard-fought encounter but one of few opportunities. Collins for Cardiff and Pherai for HSV both missed half-chances, while Tanner couldn’t quite convert the best opportunity of the first period just before half time. Straight after the break however, Tanner made no mistake and finished off the strongest attack of the match so far to put Cardiff ahead in the 48th minute.
Though rattled at first, the Rothosen worked their way back into the game and were inches away from equalising in the 68th minute through Yalcinkaya. It wasn’t to be though, and soon the ball was in the back of the net at the other end, as Davies got in behind the HSV defence and kept his cool to make it 2-0 to his side. HSV were still in the game and piled on the pressure, but the effects of the 120 minutes against Nantes the day before were starting to become noticeable. They were missing the composure required in attack, and conceded a third goal through Robinson towards the end.
