2-0 home win for HSV against Hansa Rostock
“Die Rothosen” won their third home match of the season, deservedly beating Hansa Rostock 2-0 in front of a sold-out crowd at the Volksparkstadion, with goals courtesy of Reis and Benes.
Hamburger SV retained their spot at the top of the league with a 2-0 home victory over Hansa Rostock on Sunday (3rd September). Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 57,000 for the 11th home game in a row, “die Rothosen” made the better start and tried hard to find a way through the compact Rostock defence. Reis eventually managed to do so in the sixth minute of first-half injury time, then Benes doubled the hosts’ lead almost immediately after the break (48’) to put HSV on course for victory. It was HSV’s third consecutive victory without conceding, which was adequately celebrated with the fans after the final whistle.
Reis opens the scoring...
HSV head coach Tim Walter made two changes to the side that won in Hannover last week: In place of the suspended Ramos came skipper Schonlau, who returned to the centre of defence following a muscle tear injury. Also, Königsdörffer was replaced by Benes, who returned after being ill. It didn’t take him long to get reacquainted with his role as the team’s metronome as HSV took the initiative right from the beginning and pinned Hansa into their own half almost immediately.
The home side were rewarded for this positive start with glimpses at goal for Glatzel and Dompe which unfortunately didn’t bring an opening goal. Meanwhile, at the other end, Neidhardt was the recipient of first chance of the game for the visitors, who were looking to break on the counter. Despite only a quarter of an hour had been played by this stage, it was clear that this North German derby was going to be intense. There were lots of fiery challenges and stoppages to play – Rostock received three yellow cards in the first half alone, and all this meant that there weren’t too many clear-cut chances on goal. The best opportunities that did arise were for HSV, for example two towards the end of the first half for Glatzel and then Benes, who both managed to create enough room for a short despite the robust Rostock defence, but who were both denied the opener by goalkeeper Kolke. However, the hosts finally made their breakthrough right at the end of the first half through Reis. HSV were once again on the attack in the sixth minute of injury time, as Reis executed a perfect dummy before finished brilliantly to give “die Rothosen” a deserved lead going into the break. HSV finally had their reward for their efforts in the first 45 minutes.
… and Benes puts the game to bed
It was a dramatic end to the first half, and there was even more drama to come at the start of the second. Or, for want of a better word: HSV had a great end to the first half, and then went to have a great start to the second. Just three minutes after the restart, HSV were on the attack again, as Reis laid the ball to Benes who let fly, found the back of the net and doubled their lead. It was a perfect start to the second half, but the visitors refused to lie down and accept defeat.
Although the host remained the dominant side and missed out on a third goal by a matter of inches as Dompe shot wide, they still had to stay awake and aware of their opposition. Heuer Fernandes was called into action to keep out Pröger in the 53rd minute. Otherwise, skipper Schonlau managed the defensive phase very well as HSV continued to get forward, with a potential third from Glatzel being prevented by the crossbar (70’). The narrow miss had him pulling on his own hair, but both he and the rest of the team were not to be denied three points today, barely allowing their opposition an opportunity to get back into the game. Heuer Fernandes was only called up once more in the final stages of the game, skilfully (and possibly fortunately) maintaining the clean sheet for the third game in a row. The entire team played their part in securing the shutout, defending with intensity all over the pitch, whilst also controlling the vast majority of the game. They were seen over the line by the roar of the frenetic home fans. No one was bothered that a third goal wasn’t scored despite HSV having some decent opportunities; instead, the spectators showed their support for their side and ensured it was a jubilant and noisy end to a good afternoon at the Volksparkstadion.
