1-3 against VfB: HSV remains in the 2.Liga
HSV put up a great fight against VfB stuttgart on monday evening, had a breif glimpse of sensation, but in the end lost 1-3 and remain in the 2.Liga
HSV missed the sensation. On Monday evening (5 June), after the 3-0 defeat in the first leg, the Red Shorts also lost the second leg against VfB Stuttgart 3-1 (1-0) and will therefore remain in the 2nd division in the coming season. It all started so well, Kittel gave HSV a 1:0 lead in the 6th minute, setting the Volksparkstadion on fire. HSV had a brief glimpse of the football miracle that had been proclaimed before kick-off, but in the end it was not quite enough. After the change of ends, the visitors struck quickly and ice-cold: Millot turned the game around with his brace (48th, 64th), and Silas put the lid on the 3:1 victory for the visitors in injury time. However, this did not change the incredible support of the spectators for their team, so that this last HSV home match of the season in the sold-out Volksparkstadion was once again one of great emotions.
Hamburg's dream start ...
HSV coach Tim Walter had to change one position in his starting eleven compared to the first leg, with Montero replacing the sick David in central defence. But that was not the focus at the beginning, because HSV pressed forward from the start, put VfB under massive pressure and made it clear that nothing would be given away this evening, despite the 3-0 deficit from the first leg. Driven on by a deafening hurricane of HSV fans, the Rothosen pressed directly for the first goal - and struck like a dream!
Dompe dribbled through on the left, passed to Kittel and in the sixth minute he hammered the ball into the left corner from 20 metres, as beautifully as it was unstoppable. What a start, what an atmosphere, what a volume! And the next storm of cheers was not long in coming, but this time for a different reason: VfB now also found their way into the game a little better and Guirassy magicked the ball into the goal with a heel in the 17th minute, but the goal was conceded by the VAR due to a previous offside position - and the Volkspark exploded a second time. So HSV still led 1:0, but still trailed 1:3 overall. And the pressure continued. Again and again, the ball went through the outer lanes, especially through the left wing, and towards the end of the first half, VfB keeper Müller was not only bombarded by Kittel's and Glatzel's long-range shots, but also by a lot of crosses. Müller was just able to clear one of them off the line in the second minute of stoppage time after Jatta's header, thus keeping the half-time score at 1:0 for HSV.
... and a shattered dream
After the second half, however, the dream of a football miracle was soon over. The game was only three minutes old when the visitors struck ice-cold and scored through Millot to make it 1:1. The team and fans had to recover from this mood killer, but then they started again - and received the final blow at the back: the devilish Heuer Fernandes was the unlucky one in the 64th minute, who made a hole in the air after a back pass, so that Millot only had to push the ball into the empty goal to make it 2:1 for VfB.
It was the decision in a game in which the Rothosen really gave everything and left their lives on the pitch, as Walter always likes to put it. This was rewarded by the spectators, who cheered and celebrated their team, which never gave up at any point in the game, until the end and carried them through the remaining time of the game. An unbelievable unity at the moment when the team was certain that it would not be promoted, crowned with a "Mein Hamburg lieb' ich sehr" (I love my Hamburg very much) from more than 50,000 voices in the last minutes of the game, which once again made it very clear what this club is all about. Not even the final 1:3 by Silas in injury time could change that, which sealed the Stuttgart victory in the final Hamburg efforts. VfB Stuttgart thus remains in the Bundesliga, while HSV will continue to compete in the second division in the coming season, but was nevertheless celebrated by its own spectators for minutes after the end of the game and bid farewell to this season with thunderous applause.
